![]() ![]() And this is coming from someone that wrings every ounce of usefulness they can get from anything. Sadly, they deny the home user/hobbyist in their bid to make the mainstream business owner aware they aren't looking out for their own best interests by using outdated servers. I would keep these ones going in some capacity, but for the inability to update them, though third-party companies tell me they can do that with their support contracts. Which put me in a pickle because I was still running them, and still am! Though the replacement server (Lenovo, but not my choice) is up and running now. The cycle begins anew.įor instance, I was paying yearly support fees for my two servers (G5/6) right up until HP said I COULDN'T anymore, because they were too old. If it's time enough that you're considering you don't want to support those old servers anymore, that MAY be a signal that you need to replace them with newer ones. Absolutely useless if you don't need it, but priceless when you do. Well, it wasn't so much done to 'punish', but rather, to save people from themselves.įor instance, it's a GREAT idea to have a support contract on your servers through the warranty period and a bit beyond. Sure it's not exactly enterprise-grade, but if you've got a solid understanding of all systems and how they interact- you won't need Ciscosoft Platinum Firecloud Enterprise plus® or what have you. There is a lot of free software out there. The bottom line is this: unless you have a support contract, any tech (routers, firewalls, computers) you buy is yours however you only own the hardware, the software is added as a courtesy. I only use Cisco products if I was confident I could convince Scrooge McDuck that the cost was necessary. Then I got an actual job in IT and saw the pricing and contract doctrine that big tech uses. I used to make fun of the Linux fanpeople when I was in Cisco networking academy I always saw them as paranoid towards big tech. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you have the server in your possession and you can prove that you posses it legally, that means you own it and you can do whatever you want with it. I know it's not necessarily free from a financial standpoint, but there are several free BIOS' out there. I understand that nothing is free, but I'm not going to buy shoes if I have to pay a huge monthly fee for them to keep working. ![]()
